ISO 15106-1 — Determination of water vapour transmission of plastic films

ISO 15106-1 specifies an instrumental method to determine the water vapour transmission rate, WVTR, of plastic films, sheetings and multilayer assemblies. The method uses a humidity sensor to measure moisture transfer through a specimen, enabling fast, reproducible results across a wide measurement range.

Overview

The standard defines the purpose, measurement principle, test conditions and evaluation procedures, so results are comparable and reproducible.

Purpose and scope

ISO 15106-1 is intended to measure water vapour transmission for single plastic films, coatings and multilayer laminates. Typical uses are quality control, material selection and verification of barrier performance for packaging and technical applications.

Measurement principle

The humidity sensor method separates a dry chamber from a humid chamber with the test specimen in between. Water vapour diffuses through the specimen, the resulting humidity change in the dry chamber is recorded by a sensor, and the WVTR is calculated from that change. The method supports rapid testing and covers a broad WVTR range.
